David Larwill is one of Australia’s most recognisable and popular figurative expressionist painters of his generation. His artistic language is direct, spontaneous and colourful. Animals, masks, fantastic creatures and more are all encountered in his pictures, where a whimsical imagination is combined with a good dose of vernacular humour. Although his sprawling canvasses bring together the vigour of art brut with the dynamism of street graffiti, Larwill makes well-crafted paintings which are resolved and seem to grow organically through their own sense of intrinsic logic.
